Threshold Figures
plate lithograph, multimedia, 2013 - ongoing
Threshold Figures consist of a series of lithograph prints (30"x18") and animations composed of abstracted elements from Gustave Dore's illustrations of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy; figurative compositions constructed from manipulated 19th century interpretations of 14th century super-sensible landscapes.
The (Re)Punishment of the Simonists
Gustave Dore's illustrations are manipulated digitally before returning to the page using traditional print techniques. The Threshold Figures are re-inserted back into their source material; new assemblages folded back into Dante's narrative take up residence in the environments they are composed of. As subtle animations the figures take form and disperse on an endless loop, challenging the fixed nature of traditional printmaking while mirroring the transformation suggested by Dante's journey through Hell. Above: Threshold_Figure_C emerges from Dore's depiction of The Punishment of the Simonists.
